What does your church service look like? What kinds of things do you do during your worship service?
Our service is traditional in style, but often you will usually find elements from many different styles of worship. We utilize an organ and hymnal most times, but sing a variety of musical styles. Our service begins with a welcome and then a time of quiet reflection, followed by a hymn, time of confession and pardon, and passing of the peace. The center of our worship is our the receiving of the word, including Scripture readings, time with children, musical responses, and the sermon. We then respond to the sermon through affirmations of faith, offerings, minutes for mission, hymns, and once-per-month communion.
How do you do communion? Can a visitor take communion?
We invite all those who seek faith in Christ to participate in communion from birth through adults as they feel prepared to do so. Once per month and at additional special services, we celebrate communion, by coming forward to the table, receiving the elements, and then returning to our seats.
How many people attend your church?
We have around 200 participants of all ages in worship each Sunday with many more a part of our church family.
What should I wear to church?
You are welcome to wear whatever makes you comfortable. Most of our members wear business casual clothing but you'll find some people in jeans and some in a suit. It's up to you.
Can my child stay with me during the service? What do you offer for children?
Your children are invited to participate in all parts of the service as you feel comfortable. We offer a professionally staffed nursery for those preschool age or younger during Sunday School and Worship hours. We have worship bags available for our younger members to engage with during the service. You can find our more about our children's opportunities here.
What kind of outreach is your church involved in?

About Matthews Presbyterian Church
Matthews Presbyterian Church dates to February 10, 1877, when a commission appointed by the Mecklenburg Presbytery organized the Matthews Presbyterian Church. Our first church building was a one-room frame structure with stained glass windows. A steeple over the vestibule held a large, good-toned bell, the only one in town, which was tolled for funeral services and used to signal fires. The bell remains in our church today.
In 1929, work began on the demolition of the first church, and soon construction began for the building we now refer to as our Chapel building. The members moved into their new sanctuary in 1942. Built in 2001, the Christian Worship Center has been a wonderful addition to the Matthews Presbyterian Church campus. This building has allowed our congregation to continue its growth and enhanced our time together.
Matthews Presbyterian Church is a part of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. in the Presbytery of Charlotte.
Directions and Parking
Matthews Presbyterian is located at 207 W. John Street, Matthews NC 28106. Located 1 mile from exit 52 off 485 and 2 miles off Independence Blvd. via Sam Newell Road, near the corner of W. John Street and Trade Street. Parking is available with handicap accessible spots off both John Street and Freemont Street.
Membership
All are welcome to attend services and participate in classes and events at Matthews Presbyterian Church. Please visit us Sunday mornings or for Wednesday Night Supper.
Few things are limited to only members: getting married in the church, having a child baptized and serving as an elder. All of the other activities you see here on the website are open to everyone.
Becoming a member represents a commitment to MPC and our congregation, as well as our commitment to walk with you. Church membership brings you into a closer relationship with the church and its members.
