Outreach at MPC

Matthews Presbyterian Church seeks to do Christ's work in the world through outreach and involvement in community programs. We serve our neighbors, in our community and beyond.

Local Outreach

Scouting

Matthews Presbyterian Church is a long time sponsor of scouting programs in the community. They have held the charter to Boy Scout Unit 46 since 1983 and boost a growing Cub Scout pack of boys and girls in grades K-5 and an active Boy ScoutTroop (grades 6-age 18). Currently, the troop is only able to serve young men but plans to pursue a Girl Troop should there be a interest.  Click here for more information.

English as a Second Language

The ESL program is designed for adults whose native language is not English. Classes are designed to serve the needs of those individuals who have no English skills up to those who are advanced in English. The ESL Program’s sessions continue for 10 weeks. Classes meet on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 on the 2nd floor of the CWC.  Students come from countries around the world eager to learn English. Click here for more information.

Room in the Inn

On the first three Thursdays of December through March, Matthews Presbyterian Church hosts 12 homeless neighbors in our Fellowship Hall with warm meals, showers, and a safe place to sleep. There are many opportunities for people to get involved from preparing meals to setting up beds to spending the night as a host.  This ministry is hosted by the Men of the Church in partnership with Urban Ministry Center of Charlotte.

Matthews Help Center

In addition to many of our members actively volunteering at Matthews Help Center, Matthews Presbyterian donates financial support during our youth's annual parking lot fundraiser and through our mission giving. In coordination with the Child Development Center, we also gather food items for the Matthews Help Center's bounceback back program, which provides healthy, kid-friendly, non-perishable food every weekend throughout the school year. This food will not only supplement a hungry child's diet, but may also ease anxieties, improve attention span, and increase academic performance.

Habitat for Humanity

Matthews Presbyterian supports the work of Habitat for Humanity Matthews both financially and physically. This year, we will be working with four other local churches to build a home with a loving family. We engage in at least one family build per year in coordination with other area churches, usually in late summer or early fall.

Blood Drive

We host Blood Drives in the early Spring on Sunday mornings at Matthews Presbyterian Church. These drives are open for our congregation and the wider community.

Blessed Assurance Adult Day Care

Blessed Assurance is a non-profit adult day care in Matthews. There are seniors as well as some young adults that attend this day care.  Some of these young adults are brain injury survivors or cancer survivors. This adult day care provides social, recreational, and health activities and services in a group setting. Matthews Presbyterian Church leads worship each Friday during the first month of each quarter, including offering communion.

National and International Outreach

Gary, WV - School for Life

Our annual inter-gnerational mission trip is unique because, instead of going to a new exciting destination each year, we choose to go to the same place every year.  If the goal of our trip is to paint a house or build a building then we could say we accomplished our goal, but at MPC we have a much broader vision.  We are strengthening relationships, supporting the suffering, comforting the sick, and being good neighbors.

Jonathan and Emily Seitz - Taiwan

Our missionaries are Jonathan & Emily Seitz. Jonathan teaches at Taiwan Theological  College and Seminary. Emily She has done volunteer work through the Jesuit Voulunteer Corps with immigrants and refugees in Atlanta. Jonathan’s parents were ministers in the Congo and in various locations along the Eastern Seaboard.  He studied abroad in Beijing, Singapore, and Ghanam returning to Princeton University to complete his PhD. Emily studied English and Spanish in college, as well as traveling and studing in Equador.  She is a trained librarian, completing her PhD at Rutgers University in NJ.
